1. Access policy, copyright and archiving

1.1. Access to the contents of the journal

Korall. Journal for Social History is published in print and in electronic form alike. Current issues are available through a print subscription or by purchasing individual issues; the full contents of each issue become freely accessible on the journal’s website six months after print publication, without registration or payment. The journal thus follows the delayed open access (“moving wall”) model: the six-month waiting period is required by the terms of the grants that finance the print edition of the journal, in order to protect the sustainability of that print edition.

Once the six-month period has elapsed, the full text of the publications remains permanently and unrestrictedly freely accessible; the journal’s freely accessible archive covers the complete contents of every issue published since 2000.

The metadata of publications – author, title, Hungarian and English abstract, keywords, DOI, ORCID, citation data – are freely accessible and machine-readable from the moment of publication, including during the embargo period, and are transferred to the scholarly databases (CrossRef, MTMT).

The journal recognises open access as a precondition for the free circulation of scholarly knowledge, in accordance with the principles of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI), and seeks to keep the delay as short as possible.

1.2. Copyright and licence

Authors retain the copyright in their works and grant the journal the right of first publication.

Writings published in the journal may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution – NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) licence. This means that the works – once they have become freely accessible – may be freely read, downloaded, copied, distributed and processed by anyone, provided that the user indicates the author and the place of original publication, and that the use is not directed at commercial gain.

Authors may deposit the published version – six months after print publication, under the terms of the above licence and with an indication of the original publication – on their own website or in an institutional or subject repository (for example in the REAL repository of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences). During the six-month embargo, authors may make public the post-review but not yet typeset version of the manuscript, indicating the publication data and the DOI link pointing to the final version.

The rights of use of images, maps, tables and other illustrations appearing in articles may differ from the above; obtaining the permissions required for their publication is the author’s responsibility, and the rights holder must be indicated in the caption.

1.3. Archiving and preservation

The long-term preservation and retrievability of the journal’s content is ensured by the following:

  • DOI identifiers: every publication – retrospectively as well – receives a persistent DOI identifier through the CrossRef system (DOI prefix: 10.52656), so that it remains citable and findable even if the structure of the website changes.
  • MTMT: the journal’s publications are recorded in the Hungarian Scientific Bibliography (MTMT).
  • National public collection archiving: through the legal deposit service, the journal enters the collection of the National Széchényi Library; the archiving of the electronic version is provided by the Hungarian Electronic Periodicals Archive (EPA).
  • Print copies: the journal is also published in print and is permanently accessible in library collections.
  • Backups: the publisher makes regular backups, stored in several locations, of the journal’s complete electronic holdings and of the website’s database.
  • The publisher undertakes that, should publication of the journal cease for any reason, it will ensure the continued accessibility of the content already published.

1.4. Publication and submission fees

The journal charges neither a submission fee (submission charge) nor a publication fee (article processing charge, APC). Authors do not have to bear any costs in connection with publication.

1.5. Frequency of publication

The journal is published four times a year. The contents of each issue are organised around a theme announced in advance; in addition, the editorial board also publishes articles and book reviews that are not connected to the thematic block.

2. Data processing notice

2.1. The scope and purpose of the data processed

In connection with the operation of the journal, the publisher processes the following personal data: the name, e-mail address, institutional affiliation and ORCID identifier of authors, reviewers and editorial contributors; the name and contact details of subscribers; aggregated visitor data relating to the use of the website, for statistical purposes.

The purpose of the processing of personal data is:

  • to conduct the editorial and peer review process and to maintain contact with contributors;
  • to document authorship and to publish the metadata of publications, as well as to pass them on to scholarly databases (CrossRef, MTMT, DOAJ, other indexes);
  • to fulfil subscriptions and orders;
  • to analyse the readership and impact of the journal in aggregated form, not attributable to individuals.

2.2. The legal basis and duration of the processing of personal data

In the case of authors, reviewers and editorial contributors, the legal basis for the processing of personal data is the legitimate interest attaching to the operation of the journal, or the consent of the data subject; in the case of subscriptions, it is the performance of a contract and the legal obligation arising from accounting rules.

The published metadata of publications (the author’s name, affiliation and ORCID identifier) remain permanently public, as follows from the nature of scholarly publication. Other personal data are stored by the publisher until the purpose of the processing ceases, or until the end of the retention period prescribed by law.

2.3. Transfer of data

The editorial board does not sell personal data to third parties and does not use them for purposes other than those indicated above. The metadata of publications are transferred to scholarly databases and indexing services; the range of data processors extends to the operator of the website, the hosting provider and the service provider carrying out DOI registration.

2.4. The rights of data subjects

The publisher’s processing of personal data complies with the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union (GDPR, 2016/679/EU) and with Hungarian data protection legislation. Data subjects may request access to the personal data relating to them, their rectification, erasure or the restriction of their processing, may exercise their right to data portability, and may object to the processing of their personal data. In the event of a personal data breach, the publisher acts in the manner prescribed by law.

3. Privacy statement

The names and e-mail addresses entered on the journal’s website and given in correspondence with the editorial board are used exclusively for the purposes of operating the journal indicated here. We do not use these data for any other purpose and do not pass them on to third parties.
