Abstract

Drawing on a survey of nearly one hundred works of social history published
between 2010 and 2025 by Hungarian historians, the study outlines eleven
thematic areas. In addition to theoretical and methodological inquiries, it also
considers master narratives. It further examines monographs on major social
groups, including elites, the bourgeoisie, Jews, the peasantry, and the working
class. Finally, it discusses scholarship on key themes in social and cultural his-
tory, such as violence, emotions, and the histories of everyday and private life.
Focusing primarily on the historiography of the early modern and modern peri-
ods, the survey shows that in Hungary, too, previously prevalent deterministic
and economistic modes of historical thinking are giving way to approaches that
foreground historical agency.
